System director

Laurence Benson
 

 

is the founding director of the South West London Academic, Health and Social Care System. 

He was previously director of administration and finance for the library services at the University of Oxford. In this role, he headed up the business activities of the Bodleian family of over thirty libraries.Prior to that, he had worked for eight years at King’s College London, including six years as secretary of the Institute of Psychiatry. His earlier career includes eight years with BBC World Service where he led on diversity strategy, and senior roles in local and central government. While at the BBC, he won several prestigious awards, including The Times Award for International Training in 1996. The same year he became a fellow of the Royal Society for Arts.Laurence’s first degree was in biochemistry at the University of Sussex, and he later undertook a Master’s degree in human resources at the University of Westminster. He completed the advanced management programme at Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, and in 2011 was awarded an MBA at the Institute of Education, University of London.

Miles Scott
is chief executive at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust.

Miles was chief executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since August 2005.

Before joining Bradford Teaching Hospitals Miles was chief executive of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust for four years. He started his NHS career on the General Management Training Scheme in 1988 after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in History. His career in the NHS has encompassed acute, community and mental health services, the King’s Fund and Trent Regional Office.
 
Miles is a regular half-marathon runner and recently completed the Great North Run. He and his wife have two children.

Peter Kopelman
is principal at St George’s, University of London.

Professor Kopelman was formerly vice-principal, Queen Mary, University of London and deputy warden of the Medical and Dental School (2001-2006) and dean of the Faculty of Health, University of East Anglia (2006-2008). He is to be the next chair of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) Clinical Academic Staff Advisory Group, and is deputy chair of London Higher, an ‘umbrella’ body representing over 40 publicly funded universities and higher education colleges in the capital.

He has been closely involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and chaired the Clinical Examining Board of the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) and the National Institute for Health Research Academic Careers Panel. He is a member of the NHS Medical Education England Board and MPET (Multi Professional Education and Training budget) Review Steering Group, the UK Healthcare Education Advisory Committee and the Universities UK Health and Social Care Committee.

Professor Kopelman has a long-standing interest in diabetes care, nutrition and obesity, and much of his research focuses on obesity. He is a member of the UK Department of Health and Food Standards Agency Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and a member of the Department of Health Expert Panel on Obesity. He is involved in the Foresight project on Tackling Obesities (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills). He is past President of the European Association for the Study of Obesity; additionally he is a member of various national and international committees on nutrition and academic affairs.

Graham Mackenzie
is managing director, NHS Wandsworth

Graham became managing director for NHS Wandsworth in March 2011, having been director of strategic planning and borough commissioning since August 2007. Graham initially joined the NHS as a music therapist working in mental health and learning disability services. Over the last 15 years he has held commissioning and service management posts for both the NHS and local authorities in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Surrey and Bromley.

David Mackintosh
is deputy vice-chancellor at Kingston University London.

David Mackintosh was appointed deputy vice-chancellor in November 2009. Previously he was dean of the Faculty of Science there, having first joined Kingston two decades ago as a senior lecturer. After a first degree in biochemistry at the University of Kent, he had gone on to do a doctorate in diabetic kidney disease and previously worked as a researcher at Guy's Hospital Medical School, Charing Cross Medical School and West Middlesex Hospital.

Ann Radmore (chair of the Executive Committee)
is chief executive at NHS London south west sector.

She is responsible for five primary care trusts, four acute hospitals and two mental health trusts operating within the six south west London boroughs – Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth, Richmond, Croydon and Kingston. She also leads the ‘Medium Term Financial Strategy’ (MTFS) for London and the implementation of the London Stroke Strategy.

Ann graduated from Cambridge University with a Masters in History, and went on to join the NHS National Management Trainee Scheme. She worked in different middle management jobs in London acute hospitals, before moving to Brook Hospital, based in the London Borough of Greenwich. When it closed, she managed the transfer of specialist services to King’s College Hospital and Guy’s/St Thomas Hospitals.

She was responsible for negotiating the first private finance initiative (PFI) hospital scheme in London in 1996 and the negotiation of Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehamptom PFI. During her career, she has been deputy chief executive at the now dismantled South West London NHS Community Trust; chief executive at NHS Support Services Partnership South West London; director of strategy for the former
South West London Strategic Health Authority and chief executive at NHS Wandsworth.

Ian Wilson
is interim chief executive at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.

Ian Wilson was appointed interim chief executive in January 2012. He has extensive experience in both the NHS and local government, most recently as interim chief executive at Haringey PCT and interim chief operating officer at South London Healthcare.

System board

The System board meets three to four times a year and includes representatives from all member organisations. The six boroughs are represented on the board by delegates from Richmond and Wandsworth.
