Welcome to www.swlondonahsn.org for news about the South West London Academic Health and Social Care Network (SW London AHSN). The AHSN is a pioneering network, whose members include health, social care and higher education providers in south west London. Its mission is to provide world class health and social care services to people living in the region.

Why do we need a South West London AHSN?

London is the leading centre for health research in Britain ‑ it supports 50% of the country’s biomedical research – and its establishments educate 30% of the country’s health and social care workforce. However, Healthcare for London, also known as the Darzi report, and the NHS London Strategic Plan highlight the need for change to enable all Londoners to benefit from world class services, integrated with top quality research.

Key findings of both publications include:

  • London suffers big inequalities in health and social care provision and consequently in its population’s health
  • There is a need for more specialised care in London
  • London’s workforce and buildings are not being used effectively.

In early 2008, the SW London AHSN conducted its own Feasibility Review. Its findings echoed the government’s reports and prompted local health and social care experts to propose the creation of a collaborative venture to better address the health and social care needs of the local population. Potential membership would extend across constituent boroughs and include health, social care and educational Institutions within the region.
